Chamberlains is one of the nine communities located in Conception Bay South. It is situated between Manuels and Topsail, which are two other communities located in the eastern part of CBS. Chamberlains became a part of Conception Bay South in 1971. However, settlers first arrived in the area during the 19th century and by 1901 Chamberlains had established a population of 288.
During the mid 1800’s a road was built to connect St. John’s and Chamberlains allowing the residents access to a produce market. Residents found means of employment by fishing and farming. However, during the mid 1900’s they had to resort to St. John’s for employment due to World War II.
The name Chamberlains comes from a family name originating in Gloucester, England.
Chamberlains, along with Manuels and Topsail, was known to be a summer resort for the people of St. John’s. Today, Chamberlains is still recognized for its beautiful scenery and thriving business community.
